Irvine - The San Diego State women's swim team finished among the top four teams in the three meets conducted as part of the Daktronics-UCI Invitational in Irvine, Calif., This weekend.
The Aztecs began the weekend by taking fourth place (of 11 teams) at the Individual Meet held Saturday afternoon. The event consisted of 10 events covering the shorter distances. Later that day, they finished second (of eight teams) in the Distance Meet, which was comprised of four longer-distance freestyle and individual medley events.
In Sunday's Relay Meet, SDSU finished third (of seven teams) in a competition that included five conventional relays and five special distance relay events.
Among San Diego State's top performers during the Individual Meet were Amy Osback and Jill Karacozoff. Osback finished third in both the 100 butterfly (59.66) and 200 butterfly (2:10.16), and also placed ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.80).
Karacozoff, meanwhile, took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.96) and fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.93). Other top 10 finishes were recorded by Hannah Ryan in the 20 freestyle (1:56.49), Megan Storey in the 200 butterfly (2:10.91), Nicole Castelyn in the 200 individual medley (2:12.42), and Melissa Webb in the 200 backstroke (2:09.41).
In the Distance Meet, Ryan got the Aztecs off to a quick start by winning the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:31.48. Senior Erin Kilpatrick followed that with a seventh-place in the 400 individual medley (4:39.20).
The Aztecs best showing of the day came in the 500 freestyle when they took second (Storey-5:09.52), third (Ryan-5:12.25) and fourth (Webb-5:16.23). Storey and Kilpatrick also took fourth and fifth respectively in the 1,650 freestyle.
In Sunday's Relay Invitational, San Diego State' top finishes came in the 800 freestyle relay (3rd at 7:55.58), 400 medley relay (4:03.72) and400 freestyle relay (3:39.06).
The Aztecs now have two weeks to prepare for their return to dual meet competition with their next meet at Hawaii on Jan. 17th.
