ALBUQUERQUE - The San Diego State women's basketball team's road woes continued, as the Aztecs managed just 42 points, including 17 in the first half, falling to host New Mexico, 75-42, Thursday evening at "The Pit." With the loss, SDSU dropped to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while New Mexico snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to 12-5 and 2-2 in the Mountain West.
Aztec freshman Veronica Shaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team in scoring for the third time in the last four games, finishing with 13 points, including a 7-for-10 effort from the line. Shaw's classmate Ashlee Dunlap (Los Angeles, Calif.) also contributed 11 points, while Heather Wolf (Stayton, Ore.) had a career-best nine off the bench.
In the first half, the Aztecs were down early by two points (5-3), before New Mexico went on a 12-2 run to go up by 12 points with 9:40 left and the score 17-5. SDSU got back to within eight at 17-9, following a basket by Wolf and a pair of free throws from Shaw. The Lobos then outscored the Aztecs, 19-8, taking a 19-point advantage, its biggest of the half, into the locker room, up 36-17.
San Diego State opened the second, 20-minute period by outscoring the New Mexico 5-4, after another Shaw foul shot and two jumpers by Dunlap. The game, however, quickly got out of reach as the Lobos ran their lead to as many as 39 at 68-29. The Aztecs would put together a late 6-0 run in the final minutes, before finally falling, 75-42.
New Mexico, which outshot SDSU 44 to 26 percent from the field, had four players finish in double-figure scoring, including high-point player Chelsea Grear, who tallied 14 in just 21 minutes of playing time. The Lobos also added a conference game-high 14 blocks in the victory.
SDSU stays on the road for the second half of its two-game Mountain West Conference trip, heading to the Air Force Academy for a Saturday meeting with the Falcons at Clune Arena. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. MT.
