San Diego State Wins Fifth Straight

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Mike Mackell scored 11 points and reserve Evan Burns added 10 as the San Diego State Aztecs topped Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 74-58 on Monday night for their fifth straight victory.

The Aztecs (7-3) jumped to a 45-21 halftime lead in matching their longest winning streak in two seasons.

Jim Kessenich scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to lead the Mastodons (2-12), who suffered their seventh straight setback. Terry Collins added 10 points but went only 2-of-12 from the field.

The Mastodons' Brandon Jennings had 12 rebounds.

The Aztecs took a 10-0 lead at 2:25 into the game, as they hit five of their first six shots and capitalized on two steals.

They extended their advantage to 25-4 with just 7:53 elapsed, following consecutive three-point shots by Burns and fellow reserve Steve Sir.

San Diego State, which used 11 players in the first half, held its biggest lead 43-14 with 2:55 left in the half. The Mastodons committed 14 of their 17 turnovers in the first half, while shooting only 30.8 percent before the break.

Deandre Moore had a game-high seven assists and added six points for the Aztecs. San Diego shot 56.3 percent in the first half before cooling to finish with 46.6 percent.
