SAN DIEGO - Aztec freshmen Veronica Shaw (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Ashlee Dunlap (Los Angeles, Calif.) each had 17 points to lead the San Diego State women's basketball team to a 75-54 victory over Cal State Northridge Sunday at Cox Arena. With the win, SDSU closed out 2002 with a 4-5 record, while the Matadors remained winless at 0-10.
Shaw scored 10 of her career-high 17 points in the first half, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and also tallying a team-best six assists. Dunlap, meanwhile, added 10 rebounds to her 17 points for her sixth double-double of the season and her third in the last three games.
Shaw and Dunlap were helped on the offensive side by Aztec senior Jamey Cox's (Waterloo, Iowa) 14 points, including four, three-pointers, as SDSU tied a season-high for points in a game with 75.
Cal State Northridge took its only leads of the game at 2-0 and 4-2, before giving way to the Aztecs, who put together a 10-0 scoring run to go up by eight at 12-4. San Diego State continued to take advantage of the Matadors' 17 first-half turnovers, leading by as many as 20 points before going into the locker room with a 19-point advantage at 40-21.
The Aztecs' offense went cold to start the second half as Cal State Northridge climbed to within 15 at 40-25, before Shaw scored her team's first point of the half at the 16:34 mark.
The Matadors came as close as 14 points twice, before San Diego State pulled away for good, leading by as many as 32 points at 63-31, finally closing out the game for the 75-54 victory.
The Matadors' Ofa Tulikihihifo scored a career high 22 points and recorded 13 rebounds for her first career double-double in the losing effort. Cal State Northridge finished a perfect 18-for-18 from the foul line, but was also 0-for-6 from three-point range.
SDSU ends its four-game homestand with another non-conference meeting versus the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2:05 p.m.
