SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman Ashlee Dunlap (Los Angeles, Calif.), who had a double-double in each of the team's games last week, has been named the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Dunlap helped the Aztecs break a three-game losing skid last Thursday with a 62-45 win over American, recording 17 points and an MWC freshman record 18 rebounds. The 18 boards are the most by a conference player this season, tied for second in MWC single-game history and are the most by an Aztec since Kieishasha Garnes also had 18 in 1990.
The freshman forward continued her double-double trend in the team's overtime loss to Creighton Sunday, a team which was ranked No. 16 in the RPI last week. Dunlap finished with her fifth double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and 13 rebounds against the Bluejays, both team game-highs.
For the season, Dunlap is the only player in the MWC averaging a double-double with 11.8 points and a league-high 10.0 rebounds per game. She is also third in the conference in blocks and steals, while tallying double-doubles in all four of SDSU's home games this season.
Dunlap's award is the first of her career, while it is the first such honor for an SDSU women's basketball player since February 2001. The Aztecs have earned the conference player of the week honor four times since MWC play began in 1999-2000.
The Aztec women's basketball team will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 28, at 2:05 p.m., when it plays host to Cal State Northridge at Cox Arena.
