SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University will reprise its role as host of the NCAA Men's Basketball Division I Championship.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced on Wednesday that San Diego State will serve as a preliminary-rounds site in the West region in 2006. Days of competition will be March 16th and 18th (Thursday and Saturday) at Cox Arena on the San Diego State campus.
San Diego State hosted the first and second rounds of the tournament in 2001. The site was the first to announce a sellout with 11,700 fans on hand for all six games in San Diego. Cox Arena also hosted the 2001 NCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship in 2001.
"I think our selection confirms the overwhelming perception that we did a good job in 2001," said Rick Bay, San Diego State's executive director of athletics and special assistant to the president. "We were the first to announce a sellout the last time we hosted and we expect tickets to be in even greater demand in the future due to the strength of our own program."
Along with San Diego State, fellow Mountain West Conference member Utah will be a host in the West in 2006 with the winners advancing to regional play at the Oakland Arena.
