SDSU Men's Golf Claims Sixth Place At Turtle Bay

Nov. 5, 2002

KAHUKU, Hawaii - The San Diego State men's golf team shot a final-round 297 and failed to move up in the standings at its final fall event, the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. The Aztecs, who were just three shots out of fourth place following the first 36 holes, had to settle for sixth place at 23-over 887.

UNLV, ranked No. 2 by both of the Golfweek and Golfstat ratings, claimed the team title at 7-under 857, four shots ahead of second-place Tennessee and six in front of South Carolina. The Rebels had three of the top six individuals, but Washington State's Dustin White walked away with individual medalist honors after overcoming a seven-shot deficit from the second round to shoot a final-round 67 and win at 4-under 212.

The Aztecs received consistent final-round play with four of their five individuals shooting within two strokes of each other for the final 18. But SDSU received no under-par results and could not gain on any of the other four top 50-ranked teams and Virginia.

SDSU placed three individuals among the top 27, led by senior John Lieber (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont HS), who registered the Aztecs' top individual score in an event for the second time this season with a 5-over 221. A shot back in a 27th-place tie at 222 were senior John Lepak (La Habra Heights, Calif./Los Altos HS) and freshman Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS), who shot the Aztecs' best score of the day with a 73, while sophomore Aaron Choi (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and senior Charlie Smith (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) finished in a 51st-place tie at 229.

The Aztecs return to Hawaii to open the spring season Feb. 20-22 at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Waikiki.
