San Diego State head coach Deena Schmidt is in her ninth season as head coach of the Aztec swimming and diving program. Last Week
Last Saturday (Nov. 16), San Diego State won 10 of 16 events en route to a 186-114 win over Air Force at the Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center in the team's final home meet of the current season. It was SDSU's first conference win this season in five attempts. Two Aztecs set team season best marks during Saturday's contest. Hannah Ryan went 5:06.83 in the 500 free, improving her season best by some four second. In the 200 butterfly, Erin Kilpatrick improved her team-leading best time to 2:09.22. Three members of the SDSU squad picked up a pair of first-places finishes in the events. Junior Jill Karacozoff won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke in times of 1:07.40 and 2:25.20 respectively. Freshman Emily Schmied was victorious in the 100 butterfly (59.03) and 200 individual medley (2:11.28) while teammate Hannah Ryan won both the 200 free (1:56.53) and the 500 free.
Ryan Shows Free Form
Hannah Ryan's time in the 500 free (5:06.83) at last Saturday's meet vs. Air Force was her fastest since her freshman year at San Diego State. Her personal best, set that season, is 5:03.84. Ryan has also recorded the team's top time in the 200 free this season (1:155.62), an event she also won at last weekend's meet.
Kilpatrick Among Team Leaders
Senior Erin Kilpatrick continues to be one of the team leaders for the Aztecs this season. In addition to winning the 200 fly is a season-best time last Saturday, the senior from Pleasanton also took second in the 200 individual medley (2:13.18) and third in the 100 butterfly (59.54), setting personal season best times in each of those events. Kilpatrick also was a member of SDSU's second-pace 400 free relay team.
Karacozoff Leads Her Event
After capturing both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at SDSU's meet last weekend, junior Jill Karacozoff has emerged as the Aztecs' to athlete in that event. She has recorded the squad's top times in each of those races this season with a 1:07.02 in the 100 and a 2:24.79 in the 200. Both of those marks were set in SDSU's first meet of the season at UNLV.
Minnich Takes A Dive
Freshman diver Lindsey Minnich continues to improve weekly in her inaugural season of collegiate competition. She set a personal best in the 1-meter diving competition last weekend with a score of 184.30.
Schmied Leads The Youngsters
Emily Schmied has proven to be one of the top freshmen on this year's squad that includes eight first-year college athletes on its 23-women roster. In addition to recording two first-place finishes last weekend, she was also a member of SDSU's first-place 200 medley relay team. She has the team's season-best times in both the 100 butterfly (58.69) and the 200 individual medley (2:10.38). She is also a part of the 200medley relay team that leads SDSU with a time of 1:51.35 this fall.
Relays Set Season Top Times
San Diego State's two 400 free relay teams that competed against Air Force swam their best times of the season, times that rank second and third for the Aztecs in 2003. The quartet of Melissa Webb, Sarah Lattus, Amy Osback and Kilpatrick swam a 3:39.50 last week while the foursome of Stephanie Chambers, Allison Fernandez, Megan Storey and Ryan went 3:41.76.
The Schedule
For the first time since joining the Mountain West Conference, the league will crown a regular-season champion in addition to the conference meet champ. As a result, the Aztecs will swim dual meets against every other MWC school this season. The conference dual meet schedule will be concluded by Nov. 23. SDSU hosted just two meets this fall: the contest vs. Utah held on Oct. 26 and last weekend vs. Air Force. All other league meets are away this season including the contest against Brigham Young, which will took place at New Mexico on Nov. 7.
Looking Ahead
Following this weekend's two meets, the Aztecs will be idle until early December when they will participate in the Speedo Cup at Long Beach State. That invitational, featuring collegiate teams from throughout southern California, runs Dec. 5-7.
