ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State overcame a 2-1 deficit to edge New Mexico, 3-2 (24-30, 30-24, 27-30, 30-21, 16-14), in Albuquerque Friday evening. The win improved the Aztecs to 19-11 on the season and 10-3 in Mountain West Conference play. With the victory, SDSU assured itself of finishing no lower than second in the final MWC standings as it currently trails first-place Colorado State by one game with one contest remaining in the league season. The loss dropped the Lobos to 7-19 (2-11 MWC).
Junior Zlatina Anguelova led all players with a 29 kills on the night, a career best and a team high for the season. She added 13 digs to record her 12th double double of the year while hitting .328 over the five-game contest.
Anguelova was joined by teammate Aspen McPartland who notched her team-leading 14 double double this fall with 14 kills and 18 digs. Rochelle Currier (19) and Megan Schauermann (10) also ended their night in double figures in kills.
New Mexico was led by Staci Masten and Anna Reines who had 20 and 19 kills respectively.
Playing without senior middle blocker Nicole Akporiaye, the Aztecs were out-blocked at the next (13.5-10) for one of the few times this season. The Lobo's Chelsea Sondrup led UNM with eight block assists.
The Aztecs conclude their 2002 conference season Saturday night (Nov. 16) when the face the Air Force Falcons in Colorado Springs.
San Diego State will begin play in the Mountain West Conference championship tournament next Thursday, Oct. 21, at Colorado State. Should the Aztecs and UNLV both win their final MWC matches tomorrow night (Nov. 16), SDSU would be the number-two seed for the tourney and face New Mexico in the first round.
