Former Aztec Soccer Player Selected For Salvadoran National Team

Nov. 14, 2002

SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State men's soccer player Carlos Menjivar will be included on the roster of the El Salvador national team that faces the United States at noon PST Sunday in an ESPN-televised match at Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium.

Menjivar and the Salvadoran team, comprised exclusively of under-22 players, is tuning up for the Nov. 23-Dec. 7 Central American & Caribbean Games, while the U.S. squad is playing its first international game since the 2002 World Cup.

Menjivar, 21, who was born in San Francisco but whose father immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador 30 years ago, played for San Diego State during the 2000 season. He saw action in 17 games, including 12 starts, and registered two goals and an assist for head coach Lev Kirshner's first Aztec team.

"I'm proud to see one of my players continue the legacy that began under coaches George Logan and Chuck Clegg," Kirshner said. "Carlos is a very talented competitor and it is great to see that San Diego State has produced yet another professional and national team-caliber player."

A defensive midfielder, Menjivar currently plays professionally in El Salvador for the first-place FAS club. He is the 43rd Aztec to sign a professional contract and the 23rd national-team member that the SDSU program has produced.
