Aztec Football Players Earn Academic Honors

SAN DIEGO - Two San Diego State football players, receiver Kassim Osgood and punter Brian Simnjanovski, have been honored as selections to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII football team, it was announced Thursday.

Osgood was a first-team all-district pick and will appear on the Verizon Academic All-America national ballot. Simnjanovski, a second-team academic All-American last season, was a second-team all-district selection.

Osgood, who is playing in his only season as an Aztec after transferring from Cal Poly, is third nationally in receptions per game (8.1) and receiving yards per game (113.1). He has 81 catches this season and teams with J.R. Tolver to form the nation?s most prolific receiving tandem. He has a 3.33 grade-point average while majoring in sociology.

Simnjanovski, a product of Escondido High School, is majoring in social sciences and has a 3.43 grade-point average. He is a two-time academic all-Mountain West selection. The senior is currently ranked 11th nationally and second in the Mountain West with a 43.7-yard punting average.

The District VIII academic team is comprised of college football players from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
