Crew Closes Out Season at San Diego Fall Classic

Nov. 13, 2002

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's crew team competed in the San Diego Fall Rowing Classic Sunday. SDSU's novice eight "A" team finished in the No. 1 spot for the second consecutive head race, as it also took a first-place finish at the Newport Fall Rowing Festival last week. The SDSU "A" shell clocked in at 21:47, while the novice "B" team produced a top-five finish, completing the race in 23:43.

Dropping one spot from last year's first-place finish, the women's varsity eight "A" team placed second in its race with a time of 21:21. SDSU "B" completed the course in 21:57 for a fourth-place finish.

In other races, the women's open four "A" and "B" teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 10 teams. SDSU also placed first in the master, novice and junior four with a time of 25:34, nearly four minutes faster than UC Santa Barbara, who came in second.

"The water conditions were good," said head coach Scott Steckel. "We are pleased with the results and are looking forward to a strong spring season."

The San Diego Fall Classic marks the final event of the fall season. Women's crew returns to action on Sunday, March 9, 2003, when it competes against UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount in the Parker Cup Regatta in Newport, Calif.
