Baseball Set To Open Fall Practice

The San Diego state baseball team, under first-year head coach Tony Gwynn, will begins its official fall practice sessions on Friday, Nov. 15, when it holds Pro Scout Day at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Coach Gwynn welcomes back 16 lettermen including two of last year's top hitters in outfielder Jake McLintock (.374, Freshman All-American) and first baseman Jon Stephens (.367, team most valuable defensive player) plus pitchers Joe Carque (9-3, 5.80) and Mike Moat (4-2. 5.36).

Also dotting this year's roster are a number of talented newcomers from the local area including pitchers Ron Lindsey (Pt. Loma HS) and Ben Coon (Grossmont HS) plus infielder Steven Boggs (University of San Diego HS).

The schedule for Friday's Scout Day include team stretching from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. followed by various activities including running, pitching and throwing. The Aztecs will play a short intersquad scrimmage at 3:00 p.m.

The Aztecs will practice daily through Nov. 26, then break until after the New Year when they will resume training for the 2003 season. Fall practice sessions are not open to the public at this time.

SDSU opens its season with a three-game series at Arizona State beginning Friday, Jan. 24. The home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 11, when the Aztecs will face 2002 NCAA Regional participant South Alabama at 3:00 p.m.
