Women's Golf Slips To 12th At Vegas Showdown

Nov. 12, 2002

HENDERSON, Nev. - As the nationally ranked contenders rebounded from a tough first round and the top of the leaderboard returned to form, the Aztecs lost their spot in the upper half of the field after the second round of Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown. A second-round 325 on the par-72, 6,129-yard Anthem Country Club course slipped the Aztecs into 12th place at 644.

After no team could break 300 in the first round, Golfweek No. 16/Golfstat No. 6 New Mexico broke par today with a 5-under 283 and took over the lead at 13-over 589. Host school UNLV, the first-round leader, stands second at 594 while No. 14/No. 13 Pepperdine is third at 602. No golfer could break par yesterday either, but Sunny Oh of UNLV gained the individual lead on the strength of a second-round 70 that leaves her at 1-over 145. Three players are a stroke back at 146 and the nation's No. 1-ranked golfer, Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, is four shots behind at 149.

The Aztecs began the second round on the back nine, where they came in yesterday at 10-over par to grab a share of eighth place. However, the back nine played much more difficult today for the Aztecs at 16-over, and SDSU went on to finish with a 36-over second round.

Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) was the only Aztec to improve on her first-round score as she followed up yesterday's 79 with a 78 today. Kim, who has recorded eight straight rounds in the 70s, is the top SDSU golfer in a 32nd-place tie at 157.

Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) had her streak of seven straight rounds in the 70s snapped as she shot a second-round 81. Riley is tied for 39th at 160. Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) shot her second consecutive 81 and is the next Aztec in a 44th-place tie at 162, while senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) shares 52nd place at 164. For the second straight day, redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) stands in a tie for 70th.

The third and final round of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown begins tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
