HENDERSON, Nev. - As team scores soared over the 300 mark and no individual could break par at the Anthem Country Club, the San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in an eighth-place tie after day one of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown. The Aztecs got off to a 21-over par start on the first nine holes, but were able to hang around the top half of the leaderboard as the par-72, 6,129-yard course played to 300-plus scores for every team. SDSU's top four played the back nine at 10-over par and the Aztecs finished the day at 319.
At 303, host school UNLV holds a three shot lead over Golfweek No. 16/Golfstat No. 6 New Mexico (306), while No. 14/No. 13 Pepperdine (307) stands in third place. BYU's Margaret Gibby (73) leads an individual field that holds eight top 100-ranked golfers, as she claims a one-stroke lead over UNLV's Tina Mabanta (74). A group of six others, including No. 1-ranked golfer Katherine Hull of Pepperdine, is two shots back at 75.
Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) and senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) lead the Aztec contingent and are tied for 26th place at seven-over. Despite going without any birdies on the day, the duo hung in to register their seventh straight rounds in the 70s with opening-round 79s.
Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) had an up-and-down round with only six pars, but she played the back nine at one-over and led the Aztecs with three birdies on the day en route to a score of 80, good for a share of 36th. Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) is a stroke behind Hoene at 81 and tied for 40th. Redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) stands in a tie for 70th.
Play resumes tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for the second round of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown.
