SDSU Women's Golf Finishes 16th At Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate

Oct. 9, 2002

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Despite a season-low round of 308, the San Diego State women's golf team had to settle for 16th place in the 20-team Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate, held at NMSU's University Golf Course. The Aztecs opened the three-day event in a tie for 12th place, but despite two of their best three rounds of the young season over the ensuing 36 holes, SDSU slipped four spots in the standings.

With a tournament-low 293 today, Baylor slipped past host school New Mexico State to take the team title at 30-over 894, two shots better than the Aggies. However, NMSU's Alena Sharp used the home-course advantage to take the individual title at 3-under 213, three shots ahead of TCU's Brooke Tull.

The Aztecs' top finisher was junior Shayna Miyajima, who fired a second straight 76 to grab a share of 32nd place at 15-over 231. The Wialuku, Hawaii, native is the first Aztec this season to shoot in the 70s in all three rounds of a tournament and now has a streak of five consecutive rounds of 79 or better.

Senior Claire Riley (San Diego) recorded a 78 to tie for 54th place. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore.) snapped an uncharacteristic streak of three straight rounds in the 80s with a final-round 75 that matched SDSU's best individual round this season, earning her a tie for 58th place. Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo) registered her first round in the 70s this season with a closing 79 that tied her for 67th, while freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim) tied for 80th for the best finish of her young career.

Today's round of 308 bettered the previous season-best score of 316 achieved in Monday's opening round, which gave coach Felicia Brown reason to be encouraged that her squad is steadily improving. "Everybody did their job today, so I'm pleased," Brown said. "The seniors each shot in the 70s and Shayna and Sandy shot 76 and 75. We had a good week of practice and we ended up taking eight shots off our previous best round today."

The Aztecs return to action Oct. 21-22, for the Matador Fall Classic hosted by CSU Northridge.

Final scores with relation to par Oct. 9, at the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 6,303-yard NMSU University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
