Maiberger and Redondo Among Favorites at ITA All-American Championship

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State will have two singles players and two doubles teams in action on Thursday at the 2002 Icy Hot ITA Men's All-American Championship in Stone Mountain, Ga. The tournament is the first leg of the college grand slam.

Senior Oliver Maiberger and junior Ryan Redondo earned the second-seed in the 32-team doubles field. The Aztec duo, ranked third nationally in the ITA preseason poll, will be searching for their second grand slam title when play begins on Thursday. Maiberger and Redondo will face Mark Dietrich and Simon Rea of Tennessee in the first round.

In addition, the doubles team of junior Felix Hardt and senior Valentino Pest also made the field of 32 and will begin play on Thursday against 35th-ranked Richard Barker and William Barker of Rice. The Aztec team is ranked 28th nationally.

San Diego State is one of just four schools to have multiple doubles teams in the field.

The Aztecs also feature a seeded-singles player in Maiberger. The senior, ranked eighth nationally in the preseason, will open the 64-player singles tournament as the fifth seed on Thursday. He is scheduled to play 31st-ranked Seth Rose of South Carolina.

Junior Felix Hardt, ranked 75th nationally, will face seventh-seeded Daniel Klemetz of Middle Tennessee State in Thursday's first-round action.

The tournament, which concludes on Sunday, opens with the first two singles rounds and the first doubles round on Thursday.
