GENOA, Nev. - Despite a third consecutive near-par round, the San Diego State men's golf team failed to move up in the standings and ended up with an eighth-place finish at the Wolf Pack Classic. At 13-under 851 following a third straight under-par round, host school Nevada claimed a five-shot victory over runner-up Texas-El Paso (856).
On the par-72, 7,359-yard Genoa Lakes Golf Club, the Aztecs strung together their best three-round score since an 858 at last season's April 5-6 Border Olympics, but today's final-round 290 could only close them within one shot of seventh-place San Jose State. SDSU finished only four shots out of fourth place.
In only the second event of his collegiate career, redshirt freshman Andrew Scott recorded his first top-10 result with a ninth-place finish. The Henderson, Nev., native, who shot a 224 in his first event at last month's Tucker Intercollegiate, recorded two sub-par rounds to finish at 3-under 213, nine shots behind individual champion Kurt Kowaluk of Wyoming (204).
Senior Brian Miller capped off a successful 2002 debut with a final-round 69. Playing his first tournament since the 2001 spring season, Miller, who redshirted last year, finished at 1-under in a tie for 16th place. Among the Aztecs' other results, senior John Lepak tied for 40th at 222, junior Mark Warman placed in a tie for 44th at 223 and senior John Lieber tied for 49th at 224.
Redshirt sophomore Aaron Choi, competing as an individual, completed his first tournament in almost two years with a third-round 71 that left him with a share of 29th place at 220.
The Aztecs return to action Friday at the Fresno Lexus Classic, hosted by Fresno State.
