Women's Golf Tied For 12th At Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate

Oct. 7, 2002

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The San Diego State women's golf team began the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate with an opening-round 316, good for a 12th-place tie in the 20-team field. Golfweek No. 6-ranked New Mexico leads at 11-over 299, five shots ahead of second-place Baylor (304) and six shots in front of host school New Mexico State and Arkansas-Little Rock.

Despite windy conditions that kept every team but New Mexico over the 300 mark and all but one individual over par, the Aztecs improved their score for the third straight round this season with today's 28-over total. Since opening the season with a first-round 331 at the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational, SDSU has subsequently dropped five, two, and now eight shots from the previous round's score.

"We played all right," coach Felicia Brown said. "We need to play well against certain teams this season, and I think we did much better this time." Added junior Shayna Miyajima: "I think we improved greatly from the last tournament."

New Mexico's Kellyn Newman was the only player to shoot par today. Her score of 72 leads Baylor's Melanie Hagewood (73) and San Jose State's Tai Kinney (73) by one shot.

The Aztecs' top individual was senior Claire Riley, who matched her best round of the season with a six-over 78 to tie for 29th. A shot back at 79 is Miyajima and freshman Toni Lutz, who completed her best collegiate round with the 7-over-par score. Senior Jennifer Hoene sits in a tie for 48th at 80, while junior Sandy Kim is tied for 67th at 82.

Play resumes tomorrow at 7:44 a.m. MST for the second round of the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate.
