GENOA, Nev. - Despite its best two rounds of the young season, the San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in eighth place after the first day of competition in the 15-team Wolf Pack Classic held at the par-72, 7,359-yard Genoa Lakes G.C. At 5-over 579 following rounds of 290 and 289, the Aztecs trail leader and host school Nevada (567) by 12 shots. Texas-El Paso stands in second place at 7-under 569 while Washington State and Denver are tied for third at 5-under 571.
Freshman Andrew Scott is the top Aztec. His 4-under total of 140, bolstered by a first-round 69, is tied for fifth, four strokes behind leader Isaac Weintraub of San Jose State.
A couple of redshirt seniors are the Aztecs' next-best finishers after the second round. John Lepak, who fired back-to-back rounds of 73, and Brian Miller, who opened his first tournament of the season with a first-round 71 and followed it with a 75, are tied for 33rd at 2-over 146. Junior Mark Warman recovered nicely from a first-round 77 to record a 71 and grab a share of 44th place at 148, while senior John Lieber shot 77-74 and is tied for 54th at 151. Playing his first tournament in almost two years as an individual, sophomore Aaron Choi is tied for 48th after shooting 74-75-149.
Play resumes tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. for the third and final round of the Wolf Pack Classic.
