MALIBU, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team fell to Pepperdine, 4-1, Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs were playing the 19th-ranked Waves without the presence of four of their starters, as Kim Castellanos, Erica Lopez, Noelle Jouglet and Hannah Garl were out due to injury. San Diego State now possesses a 7-3-0 overall record, while Pepperdine improved to 10-0-2 on the season.
Pepperdine scored two goals within the first 10 minutes of action, as senior forward Kristi Bissonnette knocked in an unassisted goal before the five-minute mark. Sophomore Ali Pavoni followed with a goal in the ninth minute of play with assistance from Lacy Ubaldi and April Blaker. The Aztecs looked to even the score, as freshman midfielder Lisette Martinez scored a goal for SDSU at 19:59, the fourth of her collegiate career.
The score was 2-1, in favor of the Waves, entering the second half. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Pepperdine's Jenna Fodor was awarded a penalty kick, adding another goal for the Waves. Three minutes later, Fodor again found the back of the net for the Waves' fourth and final goal.
SDSU took six shots in the first half to Pepperdine's seven. In the second half, however, the Waves out-shot the Aztecs, 10-0. Aztec goalkeepers Stephanie Pearson and Sophia Perez split time at the net, each registering 45 minutes, with Pearson recording one save and Perez posting five. Martinez notched a team-high two shots, while Arinda Alvarez, Nicole Findlay, Ashley Cooper and Alexis Solovij each recorded one.
"I am pleased with the way the team performed today," said head coach Chuck Clegg. "All the injuries to starters gave some other players the chance to step up, and they did well."
The Aztecs return home to face New Mexico in the conference opener on Friday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m.
