LARAMIE, Wyo. - San Diego State, playing without one of its primary starters, defeated Wyoming 3-1 (29-31, 30-28, 30-26, 30-23) Saturday evening before a standing room only crowd at the MultiPurpose Gym in Laramie.
In the process, the Aztecs ended the Cowgirls' 11-match win streak and saw their own record improve to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming, meanwhile, fell to 15-3 on the year (1-2 MWC).
SDSU was without the services of junior Zlatina Anguelova, who suffered an ankle injury midway through Friday night's five-game loss at Colorado State.
In her absence, junior Aspen McPartland continued her outstanding play of late with 14 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks while hitting .458 for the match. Senior hitter Rochelle Currier matched McPartland's kill output with 14.
Senior Nicole Akporiaye had nine kills for the Aztecs while three others had eight apiece. Included in that group was Kara Moriarty, a sophomore hitter making her first start as an Aztec, who also had nine digs on the night.
San Diego State out-hit the Cowgirls .281 to .174 for the match and was the better team at the net, recording 17 team blocks to eight for the home side.
The Aztecs have now won six of their last eight matches and eight of their last 11. A win in the their next outing would match their best conference start (4-1 in 2001) since joining the MWC.
SDSU's lone match this coming week is a conference tilt with UNLV on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
