SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 22 University of Utah women's volleyball team (15-6, 5-3MWC) avenged a five-game loss at San Diego State (15-10, 6-2 MWC) earlier this season by sweeping the league-leading Aztecs 30-23, 30-16, 30-28 tonight at Utah's Crimson Court. It was the Utes' 27th consecutive home win. Utah finished with 54 kills, 15 more than San Diego State, and hit for .317 on the match while SDSU hit just .173 over the three games.
The Aztecs were led by Zlatina Anguelova's 12 kills while Rochelle Currier chipped in with 11. Defensive specialist Sara Engstrom was the lone SDSU player in double figures in digs, finishing with a personal season best 10 on the night.
Sabine Schulz led three Utes in double-digit kills with 14, followed by Silva Strzinkov? and Kim Turner with 13 and 10, respectively. Strzinkov? also had 13 digs, marking her ninth double-double of the season.
In game one, the were eight ties in the first 10 points, but with the game tied at 10, Utah went on a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. The Utes, who led by as many as seven points four times, hit for .387 on the game.
Game two was close early on, but with a 6-6 tie, the Utes pulled away and never looked back. Utah won by 14 points, its biggest lead of the game. The Utes hit for .469 on the game and held the Aztecs to .000.
The Utes led by as many as six (25-19) in the third and final game, but San Diego State cut the lead to one point twice late in the game before Utah sealed the game and match win 30-28.
San Diego State continues MWC action on the road Saturday night (Oct. 26) when it faces Brigham Young in Provo with match time set for 7:00 p.m. (MDT)
