SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The San Diego State women's soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped as it suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of Mountain West Conference foe Utah on Thursday afternoon. Shauna Gurr-Bingham scored three goals to keep the Utes (10-1-3 overall, 3-0-1 MWC) unbeaten in conference play and drop the Aztecs to 10-5 on the season, including a 2-2 mark in the MWC.
The Utes got on the board early, as Gurr-Bingham netted her first goal at 1 minute, 33 seconds to put Utah up, 1-0. A little more than 10 minutes later, the Aztecs answered with senior forward Arinda Alvarez's fourth goal of the season. Alvarez redirected senior defender Shawni Flint's cross with a header into upper-left corner of the net as SDSU knotted the match, 1-1.
However, as Utah pressured SDSU goalkeepers Stephanie Pearson and Sophia Perez with 16 shots for the match, the Utes scored the final four goals of the match. Utah had claimed a 3-1 lead by halftime and added two late insurance goals to finalize the score at 5-1.
Along with Alvarez (two shots on goal), junior forward Kim Castellanos applied much of SDSU's offensive pressure with three shots, including two on goal. Freshman midfielder Lisette Martinez recorded the other shot for the Aztecs, who were out-shot for the game, 16-6.
Starting keeper Pearson made two saves for the Aztecs, while Perez, who played the second half for SDSU, registered six saves. Courtney Hills-McBeth made four saves for the Utes.
SDSU next faces first-place BYU for a 7:00 p.m. match Saturday night in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs' next home match is an Oct. 31 date with San Francisco.
