Denver Passes SDSU To Lead After 36 Holes Of The Barona Collegiate Cup

LAKESIDE, Calif. - The University of Denver shot a second-round 282 to leap into first place after 36 holes of the Barona Collegiate Cup. Propelled by first-place individual Shawn Wills, the 17-under par Pioneers (559), who trailed host San Diego State by one shot after the first round, took a six-shot lead on the Aztecs and BYU (565).

Denver holds two of the top four individuals, as Wills is tied for first with California's Peter Tomasulo at 9-under 135 and the Pioneers' James Love is two shots back with BYU's Ron Harvey, Jr. at 7-under 137. SDSU senior John Lepak, the early leader after shooting the day's low score of 65 in the first round, is the host school's top individual as he stands in a fifth-place tie with Golfweek and Golfstat's No. 1-ranked collegiate golfer, Fresno State's Nick Watney, at 6-under 138.

After taking the early lead by shooting a tournament-low 276 in the first round, SDSU slipped to a second-round 289. The Aztecs have five players in the top 20, but only three are playing for SDSU's first team. Senior Charlie Smith was the only Aztec to shoot under-par in both rounds (71-69) and he is tied for 10th at 140, while freshman Andrew Scott shares 20th place at 2-under 142. Senior Lars Johansson (140) and sophomore Aaron Choi (141), who are both playing for the SDSU Red Team, are tied for 10th and 14th, respectively.

Rounding out SDSU's first-team lineup are senior John Lieber (T-31st, 145) and junior Mark Warman (T-59th, 149). The SDSU Red Team, which stands sixth after shooting the tournament's second-lowest round with a second-round, 11-under 277, also boasts sophomore Gilberto Rodriguez and senior Chris Galeski, who are both tied for 31st at 145, and senior Brian Miller (T-81st, 153).

Play resumes tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. for the third and final round of the Barona Collegiate Cup. Players from top-three teams Denver, San Diego State and BYU tee off on hole no. 1 beginning at 8:55 a.m.
