SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's volleyball team was swept in a hard-fought match by cross-town adversary University of San Diego (30-28, 30-17, 30-26) Tuesday night in USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros improved to 17-4 on the season while the Aztecs fell to 13-9 overall.
SDSU received a team-high 12 kills from junior Aspen McPartland plus seven from senior Rochelle Currier. For the second time this season, SDSU was without the services of starting hitter Zlatina Anguelova against the Toreros. The junior from Sofia, Bulgaria, is recovering from an ankle injury suffered in the matcfh against Colorado State on Oct. 4.
Torero senior Noel Frohman finished the night with a match-high 20 kills and freshman setter Lindsey Sherburne had 58 assists.
With the score even at 28 in game one, Torero sophomore Kristen Hurst made an improbable dig to keep the ball alive and allow USD to take the point and eventually the game 30-28. The heavily contested opening game yielded six lead changes and 11 ties. From there, USD took control of the match, winning the ensuing two games.
San Diego State returns home on Friday evening when it resumes Mountain West conference action with a match against Air Force at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
