SAN DIEGO (AP) - J.R. Tolver caught 16 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown as San Diego State scored 33 unanswered points in a 36-17 victory over Utah.

Tolver, the nation's leading receiver in yards per game, tied Will Blackwell as the school's all-time career reception leader with 197.

After losing its first five games, San Diego State (1-5) was off to the worst start in the school's 82-year history.

Tolver, who scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Adam Hall, also moved into third place on the Aztecs' career reception yardage list with 2,719 yards.

Hall completed 26 of 39 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Kassim Osgood, who caught eight passes for 94 yards.

Utah (2-4) lost its fourth straight game. Brett Elliott completed 28 of 50 passes for 272 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in his first start since replacing Lance Rice.

The Utes took a 10-3 lead on Elliott's 7-yard touchdown pass to Paris Jackson early in the second quarter. But Utah never came close to the end zone again.

San Diego State took a 13-10 halftime lead after Hall's touchdown pass to Osgood and a 30-yard field goal by Tommy Kirovski with no time remaining.

The Aztecs broke away in the second half, scoring on Tolver's touchdown catch in the third quarter, a 1-yard run by Dennis Ordiorne, Kirovski's 32-yard field goal and a 29-yard interception return by Ricky Sharpe in the fourth quarter for a 37-10 lead.
