Oct. 10, 2002

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Oliver Maiberger and junior Ryan Redondo advanced to the second round of doubles and Maiberger won his first round singles match on Thursday at the 2002 Icy Hot ITA Men's All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Weather played havoc with the grand-slam event's schedule; forcing matches indoors and limiting singles play to one round and doubles to two rounds.

Maiberger and Redondo, the second-seeded doubles team, cruised to an 8-3 victory over Mark Dietrich and Simon Rea of Tennessee. The Aztec duo were scheduled to meet Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M on Thursday night in the round of 16.

Earlier in the day, Maiberger, seeded fifth in the singles draw, advanced through to the second round of the 64-player draw with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Seth Rose of South Carolina. Maiberger will meet Alex Zharinov of Minnesota in Friday's second round.

San Diego State, which was one of just four schools to have multiple doubles teams in the field, saw its' other entry eliminated when Gabe Coren and Daniel Jung fell to Rice's Richard Barker and William Barker, 8-2.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
