SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Silvia Tornier swept the singles and doubles title for the second consecutive year at the SDSU Fall Classic on Sunday at the SDSU Courts. The Aztecs dominated the final day of the season-opening five-team event, posting a 6-0 record in the top three singles flights and a 3-0 mark in Flight A Doubles.
Tornier, the 43rd-ranked singles player in the country according to the preseason Omni Hotels Singles Rankings, cruised to the singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Illinois' Tiffany Eklov in Flight A play. A native of Hamburg, Germany, Tornier completed the sweep by teaming with sophomore Indra Erichsen to record an 8-4 victory over Anna Anderson and Karin Schlapbach of Pepperdine.
San Diego State senior Lindsey Hedberg rallied from a quarterfinal loss on Friday to win Saturday and Sunday to claim the consolation bracket title in Flight A Singles. Hedberg defeated San Diego's Lauren Perl, 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday. The Aztecs won six of eight head-to-head matches against their city-rival on Sunday.
In Flight B Singles, senior Katja Karrento and junior Katalina Romero, concluded 2-1 tournaments with Sunday victories. Karrento disposed of Emma Murphy of San Diego, 6-2, 6-4, while Romero posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over USD's Tara Livesay.
In her Aztec debut, Patricia Graf won the Flight C consolation title with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Annie Rapp of San Diego. Graft completed the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Karrento and Katalina Romero won the consolation championship of Flight A Doubles, with an 8-3 victory over Jenny Brown and Lauren Kazarian.
The three-day, five-team tournament features players from Illinois, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, San Diego and San Diego State.
