HONOLULU - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (5-0) defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (2-3) 30-10, 30-11 and 30-23 in front of a crowd of 6,522 at the Aston Imua Wahine Volleyball Challenge in the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
San Diego State was led by Zlatina Anguelova and Kara Moriarty, who had six and five kills, respectively, while Moriarty hit .333.
UH was led by Lily Kahumoku's 17 kills with no errors on just 23 attempts for a hitting percentage of .739. The junior served 14 straight points in game one, putting Hawai`i up 21-4. Fellow All-American Kim Willoughby also had a great match, tallying 15 kills, 10 digs and three service aces, while hitting .565.
As a team, Hawai`i hit a season-high .406, while holding San Diego State to a negative hitting percentage (-.009). The 10 and 11 points scored by the Aztecs in the first two games were the two lowest allowed by the Rainbow Wahine this season.
The Aztecs will face San Francisco in the tournament's third-place match on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 5:00 p.m. (PST). UH will face the Washington Huskies tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in the championship match.
