Sept. 29, 2002

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's women's soccer team defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the Aztecs remain unbeaten at home (4-0) and improve their overall record to 6-2. Despite being out-shot by the Gauchos, 15-9, the Aztecs were able to capitalize on their shots on goal.

The Gauchos seemed to be in command of the game for most of the first half, as the Aztecs struggled for control of the ball. Then, in the 28th minute of play, SDSU freshman Erica Lopez found the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career to put the Aztecs up 1-0. Less than three minutes later, senior Arinda Alvarez knocked in the second goal of the match off an assist from Kim Castellanos.

UCSB's Krystal Sandza scored an unassisted goal with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. The Gauchos and Aztecs battled aggressively in the second half, registering seven and nine fouls, respectively. Neither team, however, managed to score another goal, as SDSU claimed the victory.

"Sometimes you win ugly, and that was the case today," said head coach Chuck Clegg. "I felt possession-wise, UCSB was playing a little bit better. They were really battling with us in the final 20 minutes, and I think we showed a lot of character during that time and were able to take command of the game."

The Aztecs' next match is at Long Beach State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
