LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The San Diego State men's soccer team suffered a 7-0 setback today to No. 16 UCLA at Frank W. Marshall Field. The Aztecs drop to 2-5-1 on the season while the Bruins improve to 5-1-0.
UCLA's Tim Pierce recorded his first career hat trick, including a goal just 16 seconds into the match for the fastest goal ever by a Bruins player. Pierce also registered an assist and totaled seven points on the day, while Matt Taylor added two goals for the Bruins.
The Bruins peppered Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes with 20 shots, including 13 in the second half to break open what was a 2-0 match at halftime. Barnes registered five saves on the day, marking the sixth time in seven games played that Barnes recorded five or more saves in a match.
The Aztecs' best chance came in the final minute of the first half, when sophomore Blake Perry's shot at 44:12 was stopped by UCLA goalkeeper Zach Wells. SDSU's other shots were recorded by freshman Matt Couch (2) and senior Abraham Martinez (1).
San Diego State returns to action Friday for a 7:05 p.m. match at UC Santa Barbara. The Aztecs' next home match is Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2:00 p.m. against CSU Fullerton.
