ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State women's golf team registered its best score in the third and final round of the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational and finished 18th. Despite the cool and blustery conditions, the Aztecs improved two shots on the previous day by shooting a 324 to finish the tournament with a total of 981.
Host school New Mexico, ranked No. 17 in the preseason by Golfweek, claimed its second straight McGuire title with a 15-over total of 891 on its par-73 home course. No. 14 Washington and No. 4 Pepperdine finished seven shots back at 898.
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull and Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum tied for medalist honors at 8-under 211.
SDSU's top finisher was junior Shayna Miyajima, who tied for 49th after a final-round 77 left her at 237. Junior Sandy Kim was one shot behind Miyajima in a tie for 51st, while senior Claire Riley shot a final-round 78 and tied for 83rd and freshman Toni Lutz tied for 100th. Senior Jennifer Hoene returned from a bout with the flu that caused her to miss the first two rounds and shot 86.
The Aztecs' next event is the Price's/NMSU Invitational, held Oct. 7-9 at University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
