ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State women's golf team improved five shots from its first-day total by shooting a second-round 326 to move into 18th place at the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational at 657. Host New Mexico (589), ranked No. 17 in the preseason by Golfweek, shot an even-par 292 on its par-73 home course to extend its lead to eight shots over second-place teams No. 14 Washington and No. 25 Oklahoma.
Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum took the individual lead at 6-under after shooting her second straight 70. Meldrum's lead is one shot over Katherine Hull of Pepperdine (141).
Junior Shayna Miyajima was the Aztecs' top finisher on the day, as she carded a two-over total of 75 on the par-73 UNM Championship Course. After beginning her day with a double-bogey on the first hole, Miyajima registered three birdies the rest of the way while playing both the front and back nines of the 6,069-yard course at one-over-par. She needed just 29 putts today as she improved 10 shots from her opening-round score.
Junior Sandy Kim registered a 79 and stands in a 25th-place tie at 154. Senior Claire Riley and freshman Toni Lutz each shot 86 in the second round.
For the second straight day, the Aztecs had to play without senior Jennifer Hoene, who is suffering from the flu. SDSU coach Felicia Brown said it is unclear whether Hoene will be available for tomorrow's final round, which begins at 8:00 a.m. CST.
