FULLERTON, Calif. - The San Diego State cross country team finished an impressive sixth out of 17 teams Saturday at the CS Fullerton "Season Opener" Invitational.
Seniors Jennifer Stakiw and Alicia Stewart led the pack, posting times of 18:27.60 and 19:21.60, respectively. Stakiw's time was good enough for a 17th place finish and a personal best.
Also setting personal bests were veterans Tina Fodor (19:55.80), Julie Amster (20:36.20), Angie Fitzpatrick (20:41.60), Laura Preston (20:43.90) and Emily Joller (21:57.50).
Surprise performances came from newcomers Jamillah Titus and Brianne Bricker, who set personal records as well. Titus came in third for SDSU with a time of 19:22.70, while Bricker finished with a time of 20:25.70.
"I was very impressed overall with the team," said Jennifer Nanista, assistant coach for the Aztecs. "They stepped up as a whole. We can only go up from here."
SDSU finished with 192 points, ahead of host CS Fullerton. Stanford won the invitational with 19 points.
The Aztecs will compete again on Sept. 14, when they host the Aztec Invitational at Balboa Park. The competition is set to begin at 8 a.m.
