SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's women's soccer team defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders, 5-1, in its season-opener Friday. Freshman midfielder Lisette Martinez knocked in the first two goals of her collegiate career to secure the win.

Aztec junior Kim Castellanos was the first to score in the game, off an assist from Gina Salinas and Arinda Alvarez. Sophomore forward Jessica Armel evened the score at one each with a goal six minutes later.

SDSU then went on to post four consecutive goals as Martinez scored, followed by an Alvarez goal off a cornerkick by Salinas. Martinez, fresh from her trip to Canada with the Mexican National team in the Under-19 World Championships, scored another goal off an assist from freshman Erica Lopez. Castellanos added one final goal, her second of the match.

The Aztec defense held the Highlanders to just three shots. The contest was a physical one, as UCR tallied 20 fouls and SDSU notched 18.

Aztec head coach Chuck Clegg said he was pleased with the team effort he saw in each of the goals.

"The five goals were well-created," Clegg said. "They weren't scrappy or mistakes. They were all really legitimate, good goals. I'm very impressed with the way the team played."

San Diego State plays its first road game of the season as the Aztecs travel to Loyola Marymount for a 3 p.m. Labor Day contest with the Lions.
