RIVERSIDE - The San Diego State men's soccer team opened its season on Friday with a 1-1 tie at UC Riverside.
Both squads scored in the first half with the Aztec goal coming courtesy of Paul Szefler on an assist from Eric Wohl at the 8:36 mark. Riverside drew even just 10 minutes later and the two squads fought to a standoff through the second half and through two overtime periods.
Overall, San Diego State was outshot by a 13-9 count and Aztec goalie Brian Barnes had six saves.
San Diego State will open its home season on Monday at the Sports Deck when it hosts Saint Mary's. The match will begin at noon.
