SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis player Oliver Maiberger won the final three games of the third set to complete a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over 22nd-ranked Marcin Matowski of UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Thursday morning in College Station, Texas.

With the victory, the junior reaches the round of 16 for the second consecutive year and earns the third All-America honor of his career. He earned All-American honors last season in singles and earlier this week earned the distinction with his playing partner Ryan Redondo in doubles.

Matkowski broke a five all tie by claiming the final two games to take the first set. Maiberger, ranked 26th nationally, bounced back by winning the first three games of the second set en route to the 6-4 win. The players alternated winning games in the third set, until Matkowski took a 5-4 lead. Maiberger responded by winning the next three games to claim the match.

A native of Lorsch, Germany, Maiberger is 28-8 on the season after winning for the 11th time in his last 13 matches. The match marked the fifth time this season he has rallied from a one-set deficit to win a match and the victory over Matowski marked the highest ranked singles player the junior has defeated this season.

Maiberger will face sixth-seeded and fifth-ranked Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington in the round of 16 on Friday.

Maiberger and Redondo will also begin play in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship later today at 1 p.m. PDT against Matias Boeker and Bo Hodge of Georgia in the first round. The duo, which earned All-America honors on Tuesday, posted a 26-8 record this season, including a 14-6 mark in dual action. They have won six consecutive matches and have seven victories over doubles teams currently ranked in the top 10 nationally including two wins over UCLA's Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer, the top-ranked doubles team in the nation.
