One Last Time
The San Diego State softball team will say goodbye to five seniors between games one and two of a doubleheader against UNLV on Saturday, May 4. The doubleheader is the last conference matchup for the Aztecs before heading to Provo, Utah, for the Mountain West Conference Tournament, May 9-11.
The conference title is still up for grabs, with the Aztecs holding the lead. SDSU must sweep UNLV or Utah must lose one of its four games this weekend, for the State to claim the Mountain West.
The Utes play at New Mexico on Friday and at Colorado State on Sunday.
Last Week
San Diego State got back on the sweeping track with doubleheader sweeps over Colorado State (9-2, 1-0) and New Mexico (4-2, 2-0) last weekend.
* The Aztecs have swept every Mountain West opponent at least once this season, excluding a split with Utah in only one meeting.
* Bre DeSanta continues her unbeaten streak in the Mountain West with an 8-0 record.
* State outhit both teams this weekend 32-15, including a 12-4 slugfest in game one against CSU.
So Long Seniors
The Aztecs will say goodbye to five seniors in their final home appearance on Saturday. The seniors have made a huge impact with the 2002 team.
* Tiffany Goudy leads the Mountain West Conference with 65 hits.
* Kellie Nordhagen's name appears on six all-time categories for the Aztecs.
* Summer Ehrsam is a huge spark defensively, leading the MWC with 424 putouts.
* Sarah Hershman is hitting .321 with 11 doubles and 16 stolen bases.
* Jennifer Seckel is the Aztecs' top pinch runner with eight runs scored and six stolen bases.
About UNLV
UNLV comes to town with a 27-31 overall record and a 7-7 split in conference action.
* The Rebels are on a four-game winning streak, with sweeps over New Mexico and Colorado State last weekend.
* UNLV is led at the plate by Geney Orris with a .331 batting average, including 13 doubles and 12 home runs.
* Freshman Morgan Bostwick was named MWC Player of the Week last week. She batted 6-for-12 (.500) with two home runs, a double, four RBI and four runs scored.
* Jackie Kerrigan leads the Rebels in the circle with a 2.19 ERA. The Rebel has a 9-14 record with 27 appearances and 143.2 innings pitched.
Home Runs... Who Cares
Sure home runs are a nice way to get runs, but the Aztecs have proven that home runs aren't the only way to win games.
* SDSU has only hit 10 home runs this season, but leads the conference in triples (15) and second with 393 hits and 207 runs scored.
* Kelcy Murphy leads the team with three home runs and four triples.
* Tiffany Goudy, Janna Kovensky and Summer Ehrsam are the only three Aztecs to hit beyond the fence in conference play.
Stop Thief!
Three Aztecs are sneaking their way into the career record books for stolen bases.
* Senior Sarah Hershman has moved into second place all-time with 47.
* Sophomore Janna Kovensky and senior Kellie Nordhagen are tied for fifth place on the all-time list with 27 stolen bases.
Leading Off
Senior outfielder Kellie Nordhagen is right at home leading off in the order, she has a .311 (60-193) average from the top spot. She is hitting .333 in conference play.
Tough Schedule
The Aztecs have struggled to beat teams in the top 25 this season, the most recent loss being to No. 7 Cal State Fullerton. The Titans won 9-0 and 2-1.
* SDSU has beaten No. 11 Oregon State and No. 20 Texas A&M, but have fallen to No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 California, No. 9 Washington and No. 16 Fresno State.
Watch For Streakers
* Joann Figueroa just finished a 12-game hitting streak, the longest in the Mountain West Conference.
* Sarah Hershman closed out a 10-game hitting streak. She had a seven-gamer earlier this season.
* Tiffany Goudy just wrapped up a nine-game streak, her longest of the year.
* Kellie Nordhagen and Janna Kovensky both have seven-game streaks this season.
DeSanta Earns MWC Pitcher Of The Week
San Diego State freshman pitcher Bre DeSanta was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week this week. The honor is her fifth of the season.
* DeSanta, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native, went 4-0 (four complete games and two shutouts) in four appearances on the week for SDSU. In 28.0 innings on the mound, she struck out 10, while walking three and giving up four runs (three earned).
* Her strongest outing of the week came in game two against Colorado State, where she gave up only two hits and walked one in the Aztecs' 1-0 victory.
* In SDSU's first game against New Mexico, DeSanta struck out three, while giving up four hits on the way to her third complete game victory of the week.
* She concluded the week with a five-hit, four-strikeout performance in the Aztecs' 2-0 win over the Lobos. DeSanta is 16-8 on the season (8-0 in MWC play), with a 1.08 ERA. Her 42 appearances and 134 strikeouts are currently third on the Aztecs' season-high list. DeSanta also is currently tied for fifth place in the nation in saves with six.
Oh Save It
Bre DeSanta is currently tied for fifth in the nation with six saves, but has pitched complete games for the Aztecs in her last six appearances.
Atop The Mountain
San Diego State has a good view from the top of the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs not only lead the conference standings, but also top the charts in several offensive and defensive categories.
* Senior outfielder Tiffany Goudy leads the Mountain West in hits with 65.
* Freshman pitcher Bre DeSanta leads the conference in ERA (1.08), strikeouts (134), appearances (42) and opposing batting average (.208).
* The Aztec pitching staff's 1.79 ERA leads the MWC.
* State leads the conference in sac bunts (84), triples (15) and stolen bases (81).
One Is The Loneliest Number
Several Aztecs have had multiple-hit and multiple-RBI games this season.
* Leading the pack in both categories is senior Tiffany Goudy. She has had 10 multiple-RBI and 20 multiple-hit games.
* Kellie Nordhagen has 17 multiple-hit games followed by Sarah Hershman with 12.
* All-in-all, 10 Aztecs have at least one multipile-hit game and one multiple-RBI game.
Sophomore Standouts
Last year's phenom freshmen have matured into this year's superb sophs. * Janna Kovensky has 55 hits, three triples and two home runs. She has scored 33 runs and stolen a team-high 18 bases.
* Joann Figueroa returns at shortstop with a .309 batting average, has 10 stolen bases and just finished a 12-game hitting streak.
* Kelcy Murphy hit a single, double and triple against New Mexico and leads the Aztecs with three home runs. She has totaled 34 RBI this season.
