SUNRIVER, Ore. - San Diego State junior John Lieber was named the 2002 Mountain West Golfer of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches, the conference announced Wednesday. It is the second straight year that an Aztec has been tabbed as the Mountain West Conference's top player, with Lars Johansson claiming the title in 2001.
Lieber, a Grossmont High School product, is joined on the league's all-conference team by sophomore Mark Warman (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS).
SDSU's most consistent golfer during the 2001-02 campaign and one of the nation's top collegiate players, Lieber concluded the regular season ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West in stroke average, shooting 72.3 over 33 rounds.
One of three Aztecs to play in all 12 tournaments this season, the junior placed in the top 25 nine times on the year, including five top-5 finishes and an individual title at the John Burns Intercollegiate.
The MWC's Golfer of the Month for February, Lieber carded 19 rounds of par or better on the year, including a career-low 7-under 65 at the Burns.
Warman, who led the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship for the first 36 holes before finishing second, ranked as the league's No. 6 golfer during the regular season with a stroke average of 72.7.
Owner of 17 rounds of par or better, Warman earned MWC Player of the month honors for March and closed out the regular season with seven top-25 finishes, including a pair of seconds.
