San Diego - San Diego State batted around in both the first and second innings, scoring nine times to counter a New Mexico five-run outburst in the first, and the Aztecs went on to defeat the Lobos, 13-9, at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon. The win completed a weekend sweep of UNM by the Aztecs.
With the victory, SDSU improved its overall record to 25-12 and 8-3 in the Mountain West Conference. They now hold a one-game lead over Brigham Young (7-4 in the MWC) while the league's other four teams are all 5-7 in conference play. New Mexico saw its overall record drop to 15-19 on the year.
After being held to a total of four runs in the first two games of the series, the Lobos came out swinging Sunday afternoon, touching up Aztec starter Mike Moat for five runs on five hits in the first inning. Junior Joe Carque came on in relief with one out and retired the side, but not before allowing two more UNM hits.
Carque, a right-hander from Henderson, Nev., pitched the final 8.2 innings for SDSU, picking up the victory to improve his record to 4-1. Along the way, he gave up four runs (three earned) while striking out seven.
The Aztec offense responded to New Mexico's first-inning output with four runs in the bottom of the inning, then scored five more in the second to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Four players had three hits apiece for SDSU, led by freshman Jake McLintock who hit three doubles, scored twice and had three runs batted in. His three two-baggers tied the school record for doubles in a game.
Carlo Cota, Jon Stephens and Ryan Wilson also had three hits for San Diego State with Stephens accounting for three RBI. In addition, third baseman Chad Corona had a productive afternoon with a triple and a home run, his seventh of the season.
The Lobos were led by the hitting of third baseman Josh Mader who went 3-for 5 with an RBI and run scored. Dusty Young, Troy Cairns and Todd Stroud all had a pair of hits as the teams combined for 34 hits on the day.
Up next for San Diego State is a short road trip to UC Riverside where they will face the Highlanders on Tuesday (April 9) at 6:00 p.m. That game can be heard live on the Internet at www.goaztecs.com.
