LAREDO, Texas - Junior Lars Johansson shot a third-round 71 and sophomore Mark Warman finished up with an even-par 72 Saturday during the final round of the 51st Annual Border Olympics, but it was enough to lift the 19th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team past 26th-ranked Baylor as the Aztecs carded a combined team total of 2-over par 290 at the Laredo Country Club to finish second.
Baylor, which led the event wire-to-wire, completed the nation's second-oldest collegiate golf tournament with a final team score of 19-under 845, 13 strokes ahead of the Aztecs (6-under 858), who came up just short of their fourth win of the spring.
Mountain West Conference rival and 18th-ranked New Mexico, the defending Border Olympics champion, placed third at 1-over 865.
"We played just okay today and that's not good enough to win a tournament of this caliber, which is a good lesson for us to learn," said SDSU head coach Dale Walker. "But to come to Texas, not play our best golf, and still finish second against some of the Southwest's best teams is not at all disappointing."
Johansson, 1-under and tied for 13th after Friday's opening 36 holes, climbed five spots in the final individual standings to finish tied for eighth at 2-under 214. The junior was one of four Aztecs to complete the two-day tournament in the top 25. Senior Brandon Kearney tied for 16th at 1-over 217, while junior John Lieber tied for 21st at 2-over 218.
Senior Scott Henderson, tied for fifth through two rounds, slipped to 25th at 3-over 219 following his 79 Saturday. Sophomore Mark Warman made SDSU's biggest jump in the standings, vaulting from 59th to 40th and finishing up at 6-over 222.
The San Diego State men's golf team returns to action April 20-21, when the Aztecs travel to Northern California for the Stanford Invitational.
