San Diego State Men's Tennis Defeats 35th-Ranked Tulsa, 4-3

April 5, 2002

SAN DIEGO - Junior All-American Oliver Maiberger returned to the Aztec lineup and won matches at number one singles and number one doubles as 32nd-ranked San Diego State defeated 35th-ranked Tulsa, 4-3, Friday afternoon on the SDSU Courts.

Maiberger, who missed the previous five matches with a viral infection, is ranked third nationally in doubles and 19th in singles. The junior teamed with Ryan Redondo at number one doubles for an 8-4 victory and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at number one singles. Both victories came over ranked opponents.

"I felt like we came out and competed today and that was one thing I was looking for," head coach John Nelson said. "For missing two weeks of competition, Oliver came out and looked great. This is a solid win for us."

San Diego State won the doubles point with Maiberger and Redondo defeating 27th-ranked Dane McGregor and Shriranga Sudhakara in number one doubles and Felix Hardt and Valentino Pest claiming an 8-6 victory over Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor at number two doubles.

The Aztecs added to their lead with two quick victories in singles play. At number three singles, Hardt defeated Livesay, 6-3, 6-0 and at number one singles, 19th-ranked Maiberger recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over 103rd-ranked Pawel Sebastyanski.

San Diego State clinched the team match at number two singles, when Pest claimed a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over McGregor. That gave San Diego State an insurmountable 4-0 advantage.

Tulsa won the final three singles matches - all in three sets. At number four singles, Alejandro Tejerina overcame a one-set deficit to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Travis Hasson. Tulsa's Taylor and Shriranga Sudhakara also record victories at number five and six singles.

Tulsa drops to 14-8 with the loss while San Diego State improves to 11-8 overall. The Aztecs will travel across the city to battle San Diego on the USD campus on Tuesday.
