Aztec Water Polo Upsets No. 6 San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Aztec Holly Hartzell scored the game-winning goal with 1:43 remaining in the game as eighth-ranked San Diego State upset No. 6 San Jose State 8-7 Thursday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Aquatics Center at San Jose State.

Both teams opened the match scoring three goals in the first period. Hartzell was responsible for two with Casey Finnegan scoring the third.

San Diego State opened up a 5-4 lead after two periods with two goals by Amber Prestegard. Spartan Christine Welsh scored the only goal for San Jose State of the period. The Aztecs then held the Spartans scoreless in the third period to take a 6-4 lead into the final period of the game.

SDSU scored the first goal of the fourth and led 7-4 before the Spartans scored the next three goals. In a span of 2:59 three Spartans fired goals to tie the game at 7-7, when Hartzell cashed in on the winning goal.

San Diego State will play Stanford Friday at 7 p.m. on the Stanford campus.
