Lake Elsinore - Xavier Nady's three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth erased a 1-0 San Diego State lead and propelled the Lake Elsinore Storm to a 4-1 win over the Aztecs Wednesday night at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. The Storm, the Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, used the seven-inning contest to prepare for their California League opener in Stockton on Thursday.
Nady, the California League Player of the year last season, hit a pitch off Aztec reliever Sam Peraza over the 400-foot sign in dead center field. Designated hitter Craig Thompson and center fielder Marcus Nettles, who had singled and walked respectively, scored ahead of him.
The Aztecs had taken the lead in the game in the top of the third. Rielly Embrey reached on an error by Marcus Nettles in center field and advanced to second on a ground out by Garrett Changnon. Left fielder David Hall then hit a grounder to the right side that took a high hop over Storm first baseman Jake Gautreau and allowed Embrey to score.
Lake Elsinore added a run in its half of the seventh when Auntwan Riggins walked, stole second and went to third on a fielder's choice. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Justin Duarte.
SDSU used six pitchers over the course of the game with Eric Human throwing the first two innings and five others tossing an inning apiece. Peraza took the loss after allowing three runs in his inning of work.
Lake Elsinore starter Jason Wiedmeyer, who went five innings and gave up an unearned run on three hits while striking out four, was credited with the win. Reliever Jeremy Webster retired the six of the seven Aztec hitters he faced over the final two innings to record the save.
Josh Allen had two of the Aztecs' four hits on the night with a single and double. Garrett Cook (double) and David Hall (single) accounted for SDSU's other two base knocks.
The Aztecs will now prepare to resume Mountain West Conference action this Friday when they host New Mexico in the first contest of a three-game weekend series at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
