SUNRIVER, Ore. - San Diego State sophomore Mark Warman tied a season-low with his 4-under-par 68 Monday on the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Course and sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship.
Unfortunately for 25th-ranked SDSU, Warman was the only Aztec to break par during the opening round as the Aztecs carded a combined 5-over 293 and head into Tuesday's second round in fifth place. UNLV shot even-par 288 and leads the eight-team field through 18 holes. Brigham Young finished up at 3-over 291 and is in second followed by New Mexico and Air Force in a two-way tie for third and 4-over 292.
"We got an outstanding round from Mark (Warman) but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity we were given," said SDSU head coach Dale Walker. "Hopefully we dodged a bullet and got our bad round out of the way because we are still in the hunt."
A number of Aztecs had a shot at putting the Aztecs on top but were unable to finish the par-72, 7,188-yard course strong. Junior John Lieber, tied for 12th at 1-over 73, finished up bogey, bogey and just missed finishing below par. Lars Johansson also struggled on 17 and 18, closing out the opening round with a bogey and a quadruple bogey to finish up tied for 36th at 6-over 78.
Senior's Brandon Kearney and Scott Henderson turned in San Diego State's two other scoring rounds, shooting 3-over 75 and 5-over 78, respectively. Kearney is tied for 23rd, while Henderson is tied for 33rd.
The second round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships tees off from the Sunriver Resort on Tuesday, April 30th, at 9 a.m. (PDT).
