MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - With the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships looming on the horizon for the San Diego State women's rowing team, Saturday's Norman P. Miller Cup was to serve as a tune up. It would appear that all systems are go, with the Aztecs' varsity eight crew winning the cup and three other SDSU boats winning its respective grand final.
The Aztecs' varsity eight boat raced to a time of 7:09.3, outdistancing University of San Diego (7:10.6) and Loyola Marymount (7:19.9). The squad qualified for the grand final after placing first in heat one of the prelims, with a time of 7:53.5.
"All year we've been trying to get a very young team to gell," said fourth-year SDSU head coach Scott Steckel. "We've picked up momentum throughout the season and are doing our best racing in time for next weekend's WIRA Championships. This is the time of the season when it counts and when you need to be on a roll."
SDSU's other top finishes in the grand finals came in the novice four (8:47.3), second novice eight (8:16.4) and second varsity eight (7:32.5). The Aztecs finished second in the novice eight grand final, clocking in at 7:34.7 behind UCLA (7:28.1).
The Aztec rowing program returns to action next weekend when it travels to Rancho Cordova, Calif., for the WIRA Championships.
