Sunriver, Ore. - Senior Heather Rollo carded a 72 and sophomore Shayna Miyajima added a 73 as the San Diego State women's golf team took a three-stroke lead through two rounds at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championships Tuesday.
SDSU, which has three individuals in the top five, is the only team to break 300 during both rounds of the championship and shot a combined 14-over 298 on the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Golf Course during the second round to head into Wednesday's final 18 holes at 26-over 594.
"We are playing very focused golf right now, probably the best we've played all season," said assistant coach Felicia Brown. "I feel really good about our chances tomorrow to win this tournament. It's been a good ride so far but I honestly believe we have the potential to play even better."
Still, it would be tough to top the performances turned in by Miyajima, Rollo and junior Jennifer Hoene thus far. The trio holds three of the top-5 spot heading into the final round, with Miyajima's 2-over 144 just two strokes off the lead. Rollo, three shots off the pace at 3-over 145, is in third place with Hoene in fifth at 6-over 148.
Colorado State, paced by tournament leader Lynette Duran's 1-under 70, posted the day's lowest team total, using a 12-over 296 to take over second place at 29-over 597. Opening round leader and defending champion New Mexico slipped to third. After carding a 9-over 293 during Monday's first round, the 23rd-ranked Lobos could only manage a 21-over 305 during today's second round to finish up at 30-over 598.
The San Diego State women's golf team will go for its first ever conference tournament title when the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship concludes on Wednesday, April 24th, with the third and final round. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. (PDT).
