Sunriver, Ore. - Sophomore Shayna Miyajima used birdies on one, five and 14 to card a career-low even-par 71 and senior Heather Rollo added a 2-over 73 as the San Diego State women's golf team closed out the opening round of the 2002 Mountain West Golf Championship in second place with a combined team score of 12-over par 295 Monday on the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Golf Course.
It is the best 18-hole team score of the season for the Aztecs, who trail tournament leader New Mexico by just three strokes. The defending champion Lobos shot a team total of 9-over 293 and boast the tournament is individual leader in Kristi Larsen, who shot the first round's only below par total of 3-under 68.
"We are finally hitting our stride and what a good time to do it," said assistant coach Felicia Brown. "This course sets up well for our strengths and we took advantage of that today."
Miyajima and Rollo both finished the first round among the tournament's top five individuals, placing second and fifth, respectively. SDSU also got a solid performance from No. 5 player, junior Jennifer Hoene, who carded a 74 and is tied for sixth.
