Men's Golf Slides To Ninth at 2002 US Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. - The 19th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team didn't get the strong finish it was looking for, shooting a combined 11-over par 295 during Sunday's third round at the Stanford Golf Course and slipping to a ninth-place finish at the US Intercollegiate with a final team score of 26-over 878.

No. 9 USC, which led the event wire-to-wire and had three players finish in the top five, was the only team to finish up below par, winning the team title with a final score of 4-under 848. Host school Stanford, lead by individual medalist Philip Rowe's 8-under 205, took second at 6-over 858. UCLA shot a three-round team total of 10-over 862 to place third.

John Lieber, who was the only Aztec to finish in the top 20, led San Diego State. The junior used a third-round 71 to climb six spots in the final standings, tying for 13th with a total score of 3-over 216. It is the sixth top-20 finish of the season for Lieber, who was also the only Aztec to card a round of par or better during the entire 54-hole tournament.

Mark Warman, tied with Lieber in 19th through 36 holes, slipped four spots Sunday on the heels of a final-round 73 to place tied for 23rd at 5-over 218. Senior Mark Henderson finished up with a third-round 74 and was the only other Aztecs to place in the top 50, tying for 38th at 8-over 221.

Junior Lars Johansson tied for 51st at 12-over 225, while senior Brandon Kearney tied for 55th at 13-over 226.

The San Diego State men's golf team will take the next seven days to prepare for the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship, April 29-May 1, in Sunriver, Ore. The Aztecs will play a practice round at the Sunriver Resort Golf Course (Par: 72, Yardage: 7,193) on Sunday, April 28th, with the first round teeing off Monday morning.
